Milkcrate Cafe

Simple basic good coffee shop where you can buy records. Not a huge collection of records, but good enough place to enjoy a cup of joe and get some eggs on a bagel. Stop in.

Atlantis: The Lost Bar

First of all it’s called the lost bar. So it’s in the dive mindset. But it’s loud large and in charge. Well, it’s pretty small, but it’s at the very north tip of anything worth anything on Frankford Ave for now. It looks like you’d find a bunch of 80 year olds bitching about from the outside, but it’s as hipster as its allowed to be. Saturday night you’ll find a cute DJ dancing along spinning songs much of which you’ve never heard but are in love with. There is a pool table, local art on the walls, free soft pretzels on the tables, and local beer. Really fucking local. Made across the street at the Philadelphia Brewing company. A pale ale for $3 all the time.

Come be a local.

Looking like a university campus art building’s interior, the lobby space of the Arden Theater is a welcome appropriate for the warming environment to come inside. My first time at the Arden, seeing Beckett’s EndGame. This show not yet begun can be noted for the fact that all proceeds of this final dress go to the Free Library of Philadelphia. So why wouldn’t you invite yourself to a night which is both helpful to a cause as well as to the actors looking for some real response.

Get here an hour before these last rehearsals and pick up a ticket, donate some bucks.

Get a drink after, you’re in old town.

First Person Arts at World Cafe Live

Both parts of my night here are exquisite. First, first person arts. You should give this group the time of day one of the two shows they have each month. This is a storytelling event which happens both here and at E’tage. 10 people, 10 stories unscripted. Real stories crafted and elaborately told in front of a group of mostly strangers. Tonight’s topic is second chances. Look it up.

Secondly, world cafe live is the physical aspect of WXPN, an indie rock-ish station. Always something interesting and different. The upstairs where storytelling and almost nightly other musical events occur is a dark and seductive atmosphere where you’d want to be having a quiet dinner or holding someone close listening to a performance. During the week there are $3 drink specials as well as a variety of cocktails and wines to choose from. Find an event you might love, make it a date night.

Pizza brain

It’s a pizza joint that chose not just to be a hipster slice optional, vegan applicable, deliciously handmade house of dough and cheese and sauce. It’s a museum. A collection of memorabilia that shows people why and how society has embraced such a simple treat. It’s a Mecca of pizza that doesn’t force you to sit at dirty tables and digest a pound of grease. It’s the only place around that makes you want to appreciate a pie. Go now.

One shot coffee.

Brunchy coffee shop on the weekend, hipstery coffee shop all the time. Brewing stumptown beans, this little place is great to check out when you need to escape from the world with a book or newspaper into their “library” lounge space. This place is off the path enough to be a pleasant surprise. And try a baked good, they’re always changing.
